Hi Everyone,

I'm after selling price for a Perth Mint Gold Locket Coin.

I boobed and put it on the Introduction page, and all the photographs show on there.

It's in its original double sided glass frame, and number 483/5000.

Does anyone know anything about these things?

Yes. You are now trying to sell it on eBay for US$980 (originally for US$1,177), but is only worth US$500 in proof, which may explain why nobody has bid for it.

This value of US$500 is from the 2008 edition of the Krause catalogue, where it is listed as Cook Islands 397.

The silver version (Cook Islands 396)is worth US$11.50 in proof, only 11% of the original price from the manufacturer.

These are not genuine circulation coins, and not a good investment.

could you perchance have an image from the 2008 catalog showing these coins and the prices? i am curious as to seeing these after participation in this discussion from the beginning. the markdown is quite remarkable and the krause catalog seems to value only the siliver/gold content of the coins and not the jewels. very strange indeed. thanks.

The Perth Mint produced a large number of different lockets like this in the guise of Cook Islands coins, presumably one reason for the delay in the catalogue deciding to include them. Some are simply illustrating Zodiac signs, with the “appropriate” gemstone. There are no pictures of the “Crown Jewels” coins, but the presence and type of jewels (described as “tiny”) is mentioned.

Don’t forget that if nobody actually wants to collect them, the bullion value could not be realised without more labour than usual.

Nobody ever said they didn’t have some commercial value, especially as they are made of gold ! I told you the price as currently quoted by Krause, and Cajunsr tried to give you a current market price judged from eBay. It’s difficult to know what else you expected anyone on delcampe to do for you .

Cajunsr presumably didn’t realise that the eBay price was what you had set yourself, and you reduced it. You have set a new precedent for a market price by being lucky enough to sell it at your reduced price, still much higher than Krause. Whether or not your purchaser intends to sell it on and continues to be as satisfied as you are remains to be seen. Whether such items are considered collectable, even whether they are considered “coins”, is largely a matter of taste.

I didn't know what to expect, as the coin was a find at a Boot Sale, I could see it was a limited edition. However, nobody seemed to know anything about it. I found out by trawling the internet that The Perth Mint sold out of the gold ones within 24 hours, a certain gold investment site said they were a good investment if you could get hold of one, apart from what shows on the mounting card I knew nothing.

I couldn't find out the original selling price, so I asked on Google and Delcampe name came up as a likely place to get an answer, it wasn't until I came on here I found out it was an auction site.

I know what scrap gold & gemstones are worth as I deal solely in jewellery. I'll stick with that in future!

You let me know the price I had didn't match The Krause price which I think just about covers the scrap gold value, but not the gemstones. So I worked the price out for myself, and lowered my start price and was lucky.

Well, blow me down ! Here's another helpful and knowledgeable British contributor to the forum who has had his account closed by delcampe. Brian Kevin. Why do they do this ? If they make everyone frightened of going onto the forum, they soon won't have anybody left to answer questions in English.

Brian Kevin didn't have any useful information, just looked for an arguement. I think that is the reason Delcampe closed his account, he wasn't helpful in all cases. In my case he didn't offer any help and became insulting.

As a newby on Delcampe I asked what I thought were coin experts to help me value a coin I knew nothing about.

As he's now gone I might well start selling on here, if I can find a antique jewellery section.

As you can see the coin sold for £500.00 which is £485.00 more than I paid for it.

The buyer contacted me to let me know he's a collector of rare and unusual coins, and has left me glowing positive feedback.

If there is anything I can help on in respect of jewellery I am more than willing to share information.

for one who has not sold or bought anything on delcampe, it is easy to criticize advice given by anyone here. esp. if he is from your own country. a pity when the advice given was sound.
